I did nothing for a week in Italy and it worked

Hey Reader,

A few weeks ago I met up with my family in Italy for a week. My parents, my brother and sister, my brother-in-law, my niece and nephew. All of us in one place for the first time in a while.

I did one workout the day I landed. Then I looked around and thought, why am I doing this right now? I have my family in front of me and I don't get to see them like this often. So I put it away.

The rest of the week was pizza and pasta, laying on the beach, actually being present with the people I love instead of half there, half thinking about the next thing.

Part of me felt guilty the whole time. That voice that says you should be training, you should be optimizing, you should at least be doing something. That voice doesn't take vacations.

But by the end of the week I felt better than I had in months. Not because I did more. Because I finally did less.

We don't talk about this enough in fitness. We're wired to think progress only comes from output. Another workout, another PR, another thing to fix. So rest starts to feel like falling behind, especially in a world where everyone's highlight reel is one scroll away and it's easy to measure your body, your life, your everything against someone else's edit.

But recovery isn't the pause between the real work. It's part of the work. Your nervous system needs the down time as much as your muscles need the training stimulus. Physically and mentally, that week did more for me than another hard training block would have.

So as summer winds down, here's my challenge to you. Ending summer strong doesn't mean squeezing in one more hard push before fall. It might mean resting first, so you flourish coming into the next season instead of dragging yourself into it.

Stay Healthy,
Tommy

Blood Work: Trend or Great?

Hey Reader I got my blood work done yesterday, and I think the blood work trend has gotten a little out of hand. Every optimizer online is testing every couple weeks now. Tracking a hundred plus biomarkers. Chasing perfect numbers. You'd think all that data would make people healthier, and some of it does. But instead I watch people stress over a single lab result while sleeping five hours a night, overworking themselves, and never touching the sun. Somewhere along the way the test became the...

YOUR BRAIN ON NATURE

Hey Reader, Hope your summer is off to a good start. It's been a minute since I've written, but I've been heads down on something I've wanted to make for years. You know that feeling when you're out hiking, or standing somewhere in a national park, and your whole body just settles? The stress drops. Your head goes quiet. You feel grounded again. We've all felt it. But I got obsessed with a different question: what does the actual science say is happening? Turns out it's real, and it's...

Easy Health in 2026

Hey Reader, After 20+ years of coaching, here’s the pattern I keep seeing: People don’t fail because they lack information. They fail because they try to fix everything at once. Fat loss. Muscle. Cardio. Sleep. Supplements. Stress. Too many targets. No traction. Getting in great shape doesn’t require more effort. It requires better order. Here are the big levers: 1. Get honest about where you’re at Not emotionally. Objectively. Bodyweight trend. Waist measurement. Monthly photos. Bloodwork...
